Opportunity for All: How the American Public Benefits From Internet Access at U.S. Libraries
Examines the use of free computer and Internet access in public libraries, by income level, age, race/ethnicity, and online activity. Explores libraries' role as a community resource for social media, education, employment, e-government, and other areas
Suppressing CMB Quadrupole with a Bounce from Contracting Phase to Inflation
Recent released WMAP data show a low value of quadrupole in the CMB
temperature fluctuations, which confirms the early observations by COBE. In
this paper, a scenario, in which a contracting phase is followed by an
inflationary phase, is constructed. We calculate the perturbation spectrum and
show that this scenario can provide a reasonable explanation for lower CMB
anisotropies on large angular scales.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Myxedema Ascites: Case Report and Literature Review
Myxedema ascites caused by hypothyroidism is rare, so its diagnosis is often delayed and patients frequently receive unnecessary procedures such as liver biopsies and exploratory laparotomies. We report a 71-yr-old man with clinical ascites that was the first manifestation of hypothyroidism, and which resolved completely in response to thyroid hormone replacement therapy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of myxedema ascites in Korea. A review of the literature revealed 51 well-documented cases of myxedema ascites. Analyses of ascites from patients in this condition usually show high protein (>2.5 g/dL) and low white blood cell counts, with a high proportion of lymphocytes. A consistent feature is the good response to thyroid hormone replacement therapy, which has always led to resolution of the ascites. Myxedema ascites is thus rare but easy to treat; it should be borne in mind, especially if the ascites fluid has a high protein content
Reconstructing large running-index inflaton potentials
Recent fits of cosmological parameters by the first year Wilkinson Microwave
Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) measurement seem to favor a primordial scalar spectrum
with a large varying index from blue to red. We use the inflationary flow
equations to reconstruct large running-index inflaton potentials and comment on
current status on the inflationary flow. We find previous negligence of higher
order slow rolling contributions when using the flow equations would lead to
unprecise results.Comment: Final version to appear in Class. Quant. Grav. References adde
